Our outing began in May of 1991, when friends and fellow firefighters gathered in Orange County, New York, to honor the memory of FDNY Firefighter Al Ronaldson of Rescue 3 who was killed in the line of duty on March 5, 1991, while operating at a fire in the Bronx. What started as a heartfelt tribute soon grew into the legendary Alfred E. Ronaldson Spring Golf Classic, affectionately called “The Woodstock of Golf. ” With music in the air, grills smoking, and laughter rolling across the fairways, the event became a celebration of life, camaraderie, and the spirit of the FDNY.
By its tenth year in 2001, the outing had become the largest golf event of its kind in the world, spreading across 14 courses and drawing more than 1,700 golfers. After the 10th annual outing, the members of Rescue 3 announced that they had achieved their goals and would be ending the annual tradition.
Just four months later, the world changed forever.
September 11, 2001, brought unimaginable loss, including the sacrifice of 343 FDNY members. In the months of sorrow that followed, firefighters from across America came to New York—standing shoulder to shoulder at funerals, digging through the ruins of the towers, and offering strength when it was needed most. After the attacks on the World Trade Center, the City of Myrtle Beach, like good people from all over the world, wanted to do something for the FDNY. They invited our group to enjoy their hospitality and numerous golf courses. In 2002, the golf outing found its new home becoming the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing. The Myrtle Beach community opened its arms to the FDNY, offering a place of respite, healing, and remembrance. Firefighters from all corners of the nation came together not only to play golf, but to honor the fallen, support their families, and reaffirm the traditions of service, honor, and brotherhood.
In 2011—on the eve of the 10th anniversary of 9-11, the bond between Myrtle Beach and the FDNY was forever sealed. During a solemn ceremony, FDNY members presented the city with a steel ribbon beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Draped in the American flag and carried by uniformed firefighters, the beam became a sacred symbol of remembrance and gratitude. The 9-11 Memorial can be viewed at Warbird Park in Market Commons, Myrtle Beach.
In 2024, a committee of retired FDNY Firefighters rebranded the outing, incorporated as a non-profit and partnered with the Founders Golf group to reinvigorate enthusiasm for the long-standing event.
The FDNY 9-11 Never Forget Golf Outing, continues the age-old tradition of firefighters getting together to share good times, remember those who have gone before us, and help those that are in need. Our two-days of golf and three nights of social activities are dedicated to those who have made the supreme sacrifice, and those who continue to battle the aftereffects of 9-11 to this day. Our aim is to have you feel like you are sitting in the firehouse kitchen.
We are an IRC 501(c)(3) Non-profit. Thanks to your participation in previous years, we have been able to donate to the FDNY Family Transport Foundation, The Thomas Elsasser Fund, The Low Country Firefighter Support Team, PGA Hope Project Golf for Disabled Veterans, Firefighter Cancer Awareness and Mentoring NYS, and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network.
